BEIJING, November 7 (TMTPOST) — Chinese professional e-sports club Edward Gaming, also known as EDG among Chinese fans, defeated South Korean club DWG KIA and won the 2021 League of Legends World Championship for the first time on Saturday. Edward Gaming beat DWG KIA by a narrow 3-2 to bring home a record-breaking win for the LPL Chinese league. This is also the first time for Edward Gaming to break its quarterfinal curse.
After Edward Gaming was crowned the champion at the 2021 League of Legends World Championship, Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent shared a video clip on Twitter showing thousands of Chinese fans gathered in the streets at 2 am in China celebrating Edward Gaming’s win at the championship. Fans also celebrated the victory and expressed their pride by bombarding social media such as Weibo and WeChat with praises that glorify the team.
Each member of the winning team Edward Gaming will receive an 18 karat white gold championship ring designed by Mercedes-Benz engraved with each player’s summoner name and team tri-code, and fitted with a real diamond and custom cut sapphire. Edward Gaming’s team captain Meiko is now the only player with several major achievements across the globe.
The Chinese e-sports club’s journey to the new champion was not easy. Edward Gaming saw itself in a disadvantaged position in the beginning of the championship as the team failed to win their group, finishing second behind Faker and T1. The team also encountered great disadvantages in the quarterfinal because they were allocated to compete with their fellow LPL team and MSI 2021 winners Royal Never Give Up. Despite the matchup and the need to win five games to beat their competitors, Edward Gaming was able to break their quarterfinal curse and advanced to semifinals for the first time, eventually beating defending champions DWG KIA at the grand final games.
